The Opening Day of our centenary celebrations was a great success, with about seventy bowlers and many guests sharing in the occasion. Many of the players dressed for the event in bowls clothes of days gone by, with the lady members looking resplendent in their white dresses, stockings and hats. While the men suffered the hot conditions in long white pants, long-sleeved shirts and ties. Added to this, the use of old bowls with a very wide bias and the scene was set. There was even a check of the length of the ladies dresses and a quiet visit from our founder, Dr Elcoate.
After two games, where many players tried to conquer the wide-biased bowls, trophies were awarded as follows:
- John Hollowood, Max Williams (Elmore), Mark Evans and Heather Trotter
- Ian Whiting, Bill Toll, Joan Armstrong and Elaine Thomas
The club now looks forward to the rest of the celebrations this week, which include social bowls days, a corporate challenge night, pennant matches and a Centenary Dinner.
In Friday’s round of mid-week pennant, Echuca White consolidated their second place on the ladder with a 10 shot win against Deniliquin. With two rink wins and a tied game, the side remains in second place and will meet Moama in this week’s semi final. Roma Opie, Lee Beattie, Pat Schram and Jan Palmer continued their good form to win their game by 9 shots. The Echuca Blue side remained competitive with Moama for most of the day but unfortunately went down overall with no rink wins. The club extends its congratulations to the Echuca Blue side who fought hard all season and remained competitive. The Division Three side lost their match against Deniliquin by 11 shots, but was able to hold on to second place on the ladder. They will now have a rematch against Deniliquin this Friday.
In Saturday’s round of weekend pennant, the Division One side survived a tough battle up at Deniliquin to win by 3 shots overall. The side never felt in control of this match but finished slightly stronger to steal the win. Greg Page, Brent Reiner, Stan Glasser and John Dinsdale paved the way for this victory with an 11 shot win in their game. The Division Two side competed against Moama and remained very competitive and in the game against this side. After a great contest all afternoon, the Moama side eventually won by 4 shots. Toby Egan and his team of Col Berryman, Lynne Brown and Eddie Blampied won their game by 10 shots in this match. The Division Three and Division Four sides both recorded impressive wins on Saturday with all rinks winning their games. The Threes defeated Rochester by 16 shots, and the Fours defeated Ky Valley View by 41 shots. The Division Four side of Cec Moss, Eddie Smith, Keith McGowan and Bob Pratt finished the day with an impressive 20 shot in their game. The Division Five side played at Moama and could not quite get over the line, eventually losing on both rinks.
Congratulations to Steve Cunnington who represented CVBD in the regional final of the state singles on Sunday. Unfortunately Steve lost his game against John Berry from the Bendigo Division. Philip Thorn will compete in the regional final of the champion of champions next Sunday at Moama. The game commences at 11am.
